Margalla Hills

The Margalla Hills are a range of hills in the Margalla Hills National Park, which is located in the Haripur District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, at the northern end of the Capital Territory of Islamabad. It's located in the Himalayan foothills. The Margalla Mountains are 12,605 hectares in size. It is a mountainous region with several valleys.

Pir Sohawa, the city's primary tourist attraction, received a few inches of snow on January 6, 2012, for the first time in nearly six years. After four years, another measurable snowfall occurred on February 11, 2016, with 2 inches falling.

Khayaban-e-Iqbal begins on the northeast side of 4th Avenue (Nur Pur Shahan), runs between sectors E and F, and terminates in the southeast at the access road to the west of sectors F-11 and E-11 (Golra). In the near future, it will be expanded to Grand Trunk Road (GT).

Archaeology and Palaeontology

The Margalla Hills were formed during the Miocene, according to scientists and archaeologists working on the project "Exploring human remains in the Margalla Hills after the earthquake." The dominating Margalla limestone is interspersed by sandstone and minor shale strata. Two human footprints over a million years old, preserved in sandstone, were also discovered by project archaeologists.

The Flora and Fauna

The Kala Chitta Range is reached by the original Grand Trunk Road, which runs through the Margalla Hills. The Margalla hills have between 250 to 300 plant species. Due to their medicinal characteristics, up to two-thirds of them are utilised by humans to treat or cure various disorders.

The Margalla Hills are home to a variety of wildlife, including monkeys, unique birds, and carnivores like the Margalla leopard, which is rare and endangered.

Leopards, who occasionally come from the Murree Mountains but are normally found high in the hills, are much uncommon. Leopards are occasionally seen by villagers in Margalla.

The enormous diversity of birds in Margallas is due to a mixture of several biological components that, when combined, make this a one-of-a-kind location. In terms of the quantity of species seen, no other location in Pakistan comes close. 54 species of butterflies, 37 species of fish, 9 species of amphibians, 20 species of reptiles, 380 species of birds, 21 species of small mammals, and 15 species of large mammals were discovered after a series of surveys related to the park's wildlife.

Leisure

Observing Birds

The Margallas are a great place to enjoy watching birds. Peregrine falcon, kestrel, indian hawk, bulbul barnacle, yellow-billed bulbul, paradise flycatcher, joy pheasant, khalij pheasant, oriole, spotted pigeons, Egyptian vultures, hawks, bald eagles, Himalayan gryphons, and hawks, all can be seen here.

The cheer Pheasant are preserved well in Margalla Hills as part of a conservation programme by the World Pheasant Association and the Capital Development Authority. Cheer Pheasant can be considered to be a native of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Protection of the Environment

The environment of Margallas is threatened by mining through deforestation, illegal encroachment, development and poaching. Crushing plants in Taxila are eroding the hills in order to collect construction materials. Fires and illicit tree felling are the causes of deforestation.

The Society of Margalla Hills

The Margalla Hills Society was established in 1989 with the goal of protecting Margalla Hills National Park's natural ecosystem and preventing the erosion of green area. Its objectives includes promoting public interest in the conservation, development, and management of Margalla Hills National Park's forests, animals, and other natural resources, as well as the transmission of knowledge about the park's history, geography, flora, fauna, culture, and advantages to Islamabad residents.

WWF (World Wildlife Fund) In Pakistan
